Cuello – Modo Eterno LP

At this point in the film, the most alert in the class will already know that in Valencia -in addition to the Copa América and Formula One- many things are happening. There, what in hardcore fanzines was called scene twenty years ago has been consolidated, a new generation of groups with things to say and who stop at nothing. The four members of Cuello are recognized members of this scene, musicians who come from the world of hardcore and punk, and who live music with remarkable commitment and dedication: Oscar Mezquita (drums for Zanussi or Defeat), Nick Perry (bassist, Tucán, Ape Perry & Bonette), Ubaldo Fambuena (guitarist, Los Tracahombres) and Jose Guerrero (Betunizer, Jupiter Lion, La Orquesta del Caballo Ganador and Rastrejo), who has shaped the project and is in charge of the main composition of the songs, uncovering a melodic vein that we cannot find in any of the other groups in which he participates.

Like his previous album, Modo Eterno was recorded live by Pablo Peiró -Jose's partner in Betunizer- at the Sountess studios in Valencia. We are facing a production without watermarks or preservatives or dyes, which manages to capture the energy of the group's live performances while giving brightness and solidity to the compositions. Cuello are not the kind of band that is going to bring big surprises in terms of the evolution of their sound, since the personality of the group is more focused on the songs. As was the case with the excellent Mi Brazo Que Te Sobre (BCore 233), what we find on their second LP is a constant dialogue between a simple but effective instrumentation -indebted to the best American indie rock of the nineties- and the very personal way of singing by Jose Guerrero, a personality that is palpable in the lyrics and titles of the songs and in the originality of the melodies. It is in this dialogue between the recognizable (the nerve of the guitars and a rhythmic section that does not give breath) and the personal (Jose's vocal melodies and lyrics) where the freshness and originality of this group lies. The superb second album by the band confirms that Cuello is an approach to the language of energetic pop by four musicians who come from a more visceral and punk sensibility and who, thanks to spending thousands of hours in the van and in the rehearsal room, each time they understand each other better.
